The Baltic Sea Region SUMP Competence Centre was co-developed by SUMPs for BSR project consortium partners to address the unique challenges faced by municipalities across the region transitioning to sustainable and people-centred urban mobility planning. The project supports small and medium-sized municipalities in BSR in developing and implementing sustainable urban mobility plans that prioritise active mobility modes such as walking and cycling, enhance public spaces, and promote healthier lifestyles while reducing emissions.

The Competence Centre builds upon the foundation of a previous SUMP competence centre developed within the CIVITAS Dyn@mo project that has been valued by mobility experts across the region. We have transformed the platform into a comprehensive and user-friendly resource hub, providing local authorities with strategic tools, best practices, and key resources to support their sustainable mobility initiatives. Our work contributes to the development of urban transport systems that are safe, accessible, inclusive, affordable, smart, resilient, and emission-free.

The Baltic Sea Region Competence Centre on SUMP plays a crucial role in facilitating knowledge transfer and capacity building, offering opportunities for municipalities to exchange experiences, gain insights, and enhance their planning capabilities. Through close collaboration with project partners, the Competence Centre ensures that cities have the necessary resources to advance their sustainable urban mobility goals.

The Baltic Sea Region competence centre on SUMP is led by the University of Gdansk, supported by the UBC Commissions on Environment and Transport.

The centre has been established within the SUMPs for BSR project, which supports cities in shifting their planning practices towards people-centered sustainable urban mobility planning, focusing on active mobility modes and promoting an active and healthy lifestyle for citizens, while reducing emissions from traffic.
